How pickup works in North Carolina

Pickups in North Carolina are coordinated from our headquarters in Dawsonville, Georgia and arranged with towing partners across the region. Towing is free for accepted vehicles. We do not have an office, staff, or a drop-off lot in North Carolina, and we will not pretend to. Cities closer to North Georgia are usually simpler to schedule; farther cities can take a little longer, and we give you a real date when the tow is booked.

North Carolina title basics

Notarized title. NCDMV says anyone buying, selling, gifting, or donating a vehicle transfers it by title, and that the title assignment must be notarized (NCDMV: vehicle titles). Don't sign the back of an NC title until you're in front of a notary; we'll tell you exactly which fields to fill in. The assignment also carries the odometer reading and a damage disclosure (NCDMV: documents and forms).

Your plate, before your insurance. If you don't move the plate to another vehicle, NCDMV says you must surrender it right away at a license plate agency or by mail, and return it before cancelling your liability insurance to avoid fines (NCDMV: license plates).

Lost title. Apply for a duplicate with Form MVR-4 before the donation (NCDMV Form MVR-4).

Mileage. The federal odometer rule applies in every state: in 2026, model-year 2011 and newer vehicles need a mileage disclosure when they change hands; 2010-and-older models are exempt (49 CFR 580.17).

Mountain pickups

The far western counties, around Murphy and Franklin, share the same steep, winding roads as North Georgia's mountains. Tell us about gravel drives, grades, and turnaround room so the right truck is sent. Cherokee County, North Carolina borders Fannin County, Georgia (U.S. Census county adjacency file). If your vehicle is titled in Georgia, see our Blue Ridge page and the Georgia guide.
