Mountain town, state-line county
Blue Ridge has been the Fannin County seat since 1895. Georgia 515 made the trip to Atlanta a four-lane drive, and the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway runs to McCaysville and back along the Toccoa River (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Fannin County). Fannin County borders Polk County, Tennessee, and Cherokee County, North Carolina (U.S. Census county adjacency file).
That matters for donations. Many Fannin County vehicles are owned by part-time residents and titled in another state. If your vehicle is titled in Tennessee or North Carolina, see our Tennessee and North Carolina pages; North Carolina title assignments must be notarized, for example.
Lake Blue Ridge boats and cabin access
Lake Blue Ridge is a Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir on the Toccoa River, built between 1925 and 1930 and located in the Chattahoochee National Forest (TVA: Blue Ridge). The city calls itself the Trout Fishing Capital of Georgia. Fishing boats, pontoons, and kayaks-on-trailers that no longer get used are good donations.
Cabins mean steep, winding gravel drives. Tell us the grade, the surface, and whether a rollback can turn around. If you're not up at the cabin, tell us how the driver gets access and we'll coordinate by phone.
Fannin County tag office and Georgia title steps
Part-time residents especially appreciate not having to make a special trip. Georgia titles and registrations are handled by each county's tax commissioner, which runs the local tag office. For Fannin County, that is the Fannin County Tax Commissioner. Check that office's site for current hours and locations; Georgia DOR keeps a statewide list of county tag offices. In most donations you won't need to visit at all: you sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork.
Signing the title. Georgia DOR says the owner completes the assignment on the back of the original title, in blue or black ink, and that alterations or erasures can void it. Every owner listed on the front signs. Never hand over a title signed in blank; Georgia law treats that as a misdemeanor. We mark exactly which lines are yours before pickup. (Georgia DOR: transferring a Georgia title)
Boats and personal watercraft. Boats are not titled at the county tag office. Georgia DNR's Wildlife Resources Division has issued electronic boat titles since July 1, 2020. When a registered boat changes hands, DNR says the owner reports the sale within 15 days and gives a detailed bill of sale; if a paper boat title was issued, it must be signed over. Personal watercraft are registered on the same vessel form, and boat trailers do not need a Georgia title. (Georgia DNR: boat registration and eTitles)
Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. Questions we hear from Blue Ridge donors
My Blue Ridge cabin car is titled in another state. Can I still donate it here?
Yes. We follow the title rules of the state that issued the title. Tell us which state; for example, North Carolina requires the title assignment to be notarized.
Can you pick up a boat that is used on Lake Blue Ridge?
Yes, on its trailer from your home, cabin, or storage. Georgia-registered boats are electronically titled through Georgia DNR, so have the registration number ready.
I am not at the cabin. How does pickup work?
Tell us where the vehicle and keys will be and how the driver can get in. We confirm the plan with you by phone before the tow is booked.
Do you also pick up across the line in McCaysville or nearby Tennessee and North Carolina?
We review requests in McCaysville and throughout Fannin County, and in neighboring Tennessee and North Carolina too. Pickup is scheduled after acceptance through towing partners.
