Mountain pickups around Dahlonega

Lumpkin County was the site of the country's first major gold rush in 1828–29, and a U.S. Branch Mint operated in Dahlonega from 1838 to 1861 (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Lumpkin County). The hills that brought the miners also make for long gravel driveways, switchbacks, and vehicles parked behind barns. That's fine. When you submit your vehicle, tell us:

  • Whether the road in is paved or gravel, and how steep it is
  • Whether the vehicle rolls and steers, or has flat tires or locked brakes
  • Whether a rollback (flatbed) can turn around near it

With that information we can send the right truck the first time.

University of North Georgia students and families

The University of North Georgia's Dahlonega campus has been in the Blue Ridge foothills since 1873 and is home to the Corps of Cadets (UNG: Dahlonega campus). Students graduating or leaving campus often have a car that's not worth driving home. If the title is in a parent's name, the parent signs; if it is titled in another state, tell us which one and we'll explain that state's steps.

GA-400 ends here in Lumpkin County, so the run from Dawsonville is short, and Lumpkin is also one of the five counties on the Lake Lanier shoreline.

Lumpkin County tag office and Georgia title steps

Mountain donors appreciate not having to drive to town for paperwork. Georgia titles and registrations are handled by each county's tax commissioner, which runs the local tag office. For Lumpkin County, that is the Lumpkin County Tax Commissioner. Check that office's site for current hours and locations; Georgia DOR keeps a statewide list of county tag offices. In most donations you won't need to visit at all: you sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork.

Older vehicles. Georgia requires a title for most 1986-and-newer vehicles. DOR lists 1963 to 1985 model years as title-optional and 1962-and-older vehicles as not requiring a title; those typically change hands with a bill of sale and the registration in your name. (Georgia DOR: title not required or optional)

Lost title. Georgia replaces a lost title through the county tag office using Form MV-1 Title/Tag Application and a replacement fee (DOR lists $8). If a paid-off loan still shows on the record, the lender's Form T-4 lien release may also be needed. A title that is lost after you sign it gets replaced in your name and reassigned. Tell us at the start and we walk you through it. (Georgia DOR: replace a lost or stolen title)

Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. (Georgia DOR: cancelling a registration)

Questions we hear from Dahlonega donors

Can a tow truck get up my gravel mountain driveway in Lumpkin County?

Usually. Tell us how steep the drive is, whether it is gravel or dirt, and whether a flatbed can turn around. If the vehicle cannot be reached safely, we will tell you before anyone shows up.

My truck has sat in the field for years. Will you still take it?

Non-running vehicles are reviewed all the time. Let us know if it rolls, if the tires hold air, and whether you have the title or registration.

I am a UNG student and the car is titled to my parents. Who signs?

The owner listed on the title signs. If that is your parent, they sign the title; if it is titled in another state, tell us which state and we will explain the steps.

I lost the title. Do I have to drive to the tag office?

A lost Georgia title is replaced through the county tag office with Form MV-1. Tell us first: older vehicles may not need a title at all, and we will tell you exactly what is needed for yours.
