Gateway to the Mountains

Cleveland is known as the "Gateway to the Mountains" (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Cleveland). Helen, White County's second town, is one of the state's biggest tourist draws, and Truett McConnell University was founded in Cleveland in 1946 (New Georgia Encyclopedia: White County). This page is for Cleveland, Georgia; if you're in Cleveland, Tennessee, see our Tennessee page.

White County pickups range from in-town driveways to valley farms around Sautee-Nacoochee and cabins on the slopes near Helen. Give us the access details up front and the tow goes smoothly.

Rentals, cabins, and work vehicles

Tourist country means rental cabins, shuttle vans, and work trucks that eventually wear out. If a business owns the vehicle, the title will be in the business's name and an authorized person signs for it. Tell us the business name as it appears on the title.

Family vehicles are just as welcome: the car a teenager outgrew, the minivan replaced after the kids left, the truck that's sat since the transmission went. Running or not, tell us the condition honestly and we'll give you a straight answer.

White County tag office and Georgia title steps

You usually do not need to go to the courthouse to donate. Georgia titles and registrations are handled by each county's tax commissioner, which runs the local tag office. For White County, that is the White County Tax Commissioner. Check that office's site for current hours and locations; Georgia DOR keeps a statewide list of county tag offices. In most donations you won't need to visit at all: you sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork.

Signing the title. Georgia DOR says the owner completes the assignment on the back of the original title, in blue or black ink, and that alterations or erasures can void it. Every owner listed on the front signs. Never hand over a title signed in blank; Georgia law treats that as a misdemeanor. We mark exactly which lines are yours before pickup. (Georgia DOR: transferring a Georgia title)

Lost title. Georgia replaces a lost title through the county tag office using Form MV-1 Title/Tag Application and a replacement fee (DOR lists $8). If a paid-off loan still shows on the record, the lender's Form T-4 lien release may also be needed. A title that is lost after you sign it gets replaced in your name and reassigned. Tell us at the start and we walk you through it. (Georgia DOR: replace a lost or stolen title)

Loans and liens. If a lender's lien is still on the title, it has to be released first. For liens recorded electronically, DOR says only the lender can release them; on a paper title the lienholder signs the release section or gives you a Form T-4. Paid off years ago and never got the paperwork? Send us what you have. (Georgia DOR: releasing a lien)

Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. (Georgia DOR: cancelling a registration)

Questions we hear from Cleveland donors

Is this Cleveland, Georgia, or Cleveland, Tennessee?

This page covers Cleveland in White County, Georgia. We also review requests in Tennessee, where the title steps differ; see our Tennessee page.

Do you pick up in Helen and Sautee-Nacoochee?

Yes. We review requests throughout White County, including Helen, Sautee-Nacoochee, Leaf, and Mossy Creek. Pickup is scheduled once the vehicle is accepted.

Our business owns the van. Can we donate it?

Yes. The title will be in the business name, and an authorized representative signs it. Tell us the business name on the title when you submit the vehicle.

What do I do with my license plate after pickup?

Keep it. Georgia plates stay with the owner. Cancel the registration before cancelling insurance, or move the plate to another vehicle at the tag office.
