Gainesville, Georgia, not Florida
Gainesville has been the Hall County seat since 1821 and sits on Interstate 985 along the shore of Lake Lanier, at the southern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Gainesville). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Lake Lanier master plan calls it the largest community bordering the lake. If you're looking for Gainesville, Florida, see our Florida page, because the title rules there are different.
Hall County pickups come from all over: in-town neighborhoods, lake houses, and more rural property out toward Lula and Gillsville. Tell us the pickup ZIP and anything a tow driver should know, like a gate code or a steep drive.
Lake Lanier boats, jet skis, and trailers
Plenty of Hall County households have a boat that hasn't been in the water in years. Lake Lanier is run by the Corps of Engineers, and its boat ramps can close when the water is low (USACE: Lake Lanier boating), so we pick boats up on their trailer from your driveway, storage lot, or marina rather than off the water. Tell us the length, the engine type, whether the trailer has a title or tag, and where it's stored.
College households turn over cars too. Gainesville is home to a University of North Georgia campus, Brenau University, and Lanier Technical College, so a student's first car that's been replaced is a common donation.
Hall County tag office and Georgia title steps
Hall County donors often ask whether they need to visit the tag office before donating. Georgia titles and registrations are handled by each county's tax commissioner, which runs the local tag office. For Hall County, that is the Hall County Tax Commissioner. Check that office's site for current hours and locations; Georgia DOR keeps a statewide list of county tag offices. In most donations you won't need to visit at all: you sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork.
Boats and personal watercraft. Boats are not titled at the county tag office. Georgia DNR's Wildlife Resources Division has issued electronic boat titles since July 1, 2020. When a registered boat changes hands, DNR says the owner reports the sale within 15 days and gives a detailed bill of sale; if a paper boat title was issued, it must be signed over. Personal watercraft are registered on the same vessel form, and boat trailers do not need a Georgia title. (Georgia DNR: boat registration and eTitles)
Signing the title. Georgia DOR says the owner completes the assignment on the back of the original title, in blue or black ink, and that alterations or erasures can void it. Every owner listed on the front signs. Never hand over a title signed in blank; Georgia law treats that as a misdemeanor. We mark exactly which lines are yours before pickup. (Georgia DOR: transferring a Georgia title)
Loans and liens. If a lender's lien is still on the title, it has to be released first. For liens recorded electronically, DOR says only the lender can release them; on a paper title the lienholder signs the release section or gives you a Form T-4. Paid off years ago and never got the paperwork? Send us what you have. (Georgia DOR: releasing a lien)
Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. (Georgia DOR: cancelling a registration)
Questions we hear from Gainesville donors
Do you pick up in Gainesville, Georgia, or Gainesville, Florida?
This page covers Gainesville in Hall County, Georgia. We review Florida requests too, but Florida title and plate rules are different; see our Florida page.
Can I donate a boat or jet ski from Lake Lanier?
Yes. We review boats and personal watercraft on their trailers. Georgia boats are registered and electronically titled through Georgia DNR, so have the Georgia registration number ready and tell us if a paper boat title was issued.
Do I need to go to the Hall County tag office first?
Usually not. You sign the title where we show you and we handle the transfer paperwork. You would only visit the Hall County Tax Commissioner if you need a replacement title or want to move your plate to another vehicle.
What should I do with my Georgia license plate?
Keep it. Georgia plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle. Remove it before pickup, then cancel the registration before you cancel insurance so you are not fined for a lapse.
Is pickup free in Hall County?
Yes. Towing is free for accepted vehicles. We schedule the pickup once the vehicle is accepted and give you the date; we do not promise same-day service.
