A trailered boat in accessible dry storage has different logistics from an in-water vessel at a marina. Pickup or removal is free only when the donation is accepted and the route is confirmed.
Information to send
Boat identity
Year, builder, model, type, length, hull material, HIN, engine or outdrive, and registration or title state.
Trailer
Whether one is included, trailer VIN and title, axle and tire condition, hitch size, lights, brakes, and roadworthiness.
Location and access
Driveway, yard, marina, slip, mooring, boatyard, rack storage, launch access, crane or travel-lift needs, and property authorization.
Condition
Running status, hull damage, water intrusion, missing parts, fuel, batteries, mast, rigging, engine, personal property, and environmental hazards.
Marina and storage issues
The donor is responsible for disclosing slip, storage, yard, launch, or lien charges and obtaining permission for access. A marina or storage facility may refuse release until its balance or paperwork is resolved. We do not promise to absorb past-due third-party charges.
Boat and trailer ownership can be separate
Some states issue separate documents for the hull, motor, and trailer. Others vary by age, size, or type. Provide every title, registration, bill of sale, lien release, and prior-state record you have. Do not sign blank assignments or assume one document transfers the entire package.
Prepare for an accepted pickup
- Remove personal gear, electronics not included, fishing equipment, medications, documents, firearms, waste, and loose fuel containers.
- Disclose fuel, oil, sewage, batteries, water, mold, pests, sharp debris, and structural instability.
- Provide keys and combinations only as instructed after transport is confirmed.
- Coordinate marina or property access in writing when required.
Tax documentation
The IRS treats boats as qualified vehicles for Form 1098-C purposes. When an arm's-length sale is reported, the deduction is generally limited to gross sale proceeds. Limited exceptions, the $500-or-less rule, Form 8283, appraisal requirements, and the donor's return can change the result. We do not estimate value or tax savings before disposition.
Proceeds
Transport, marina or sale logistics, title work, auction or brokerage, and operating costs may apply. After transaction costs, net proceeds are available for the foundation's charitable priorities. Read our transparency report.
