Pickens County, from Tate to Talking Rock
Jasper sits at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the construction of Georgia 515, which connects to Interstate 575, made it a bedroom community for Atlanta (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Jasper). Pickens County is also marble country; the Georgia Marble Festival is held every October. Outside town you get hollows, ridgelines, and long private drives.
A few details make rural pickups smooth: how long and steep the driveway is, whether it's gravel or dirt, whether there's room for a rollback to turn around, and whether the vehicle rolls. If the vehicle is behind a locked gate, tell us when someone can be there or how to get the key.
Farm trucks, cabins, and second homes
Mountain-area donations often come from second-home owners clearing out a cabin, or families settling an estate. If you are not on site, we can coordinate access with you by phone. If the vehicle belonged to someone who passed away, tell us up front. Georgia has specific paperwork for estates, and a replacement title cannot be issued in a deceased person's name, so we will tell you what is needed before anything is towed.
Pickens County tag office and Georgia title steps
Most Pickens County donors never need to stop by the tag office. Georgia titles and registrations are handled by each county's tax commissioner, which runs the local tag office. For Pickens County, that is the Pickens County Tax Commissioner. Check that office's site for current hours and locations; Georgia DOR keeps a statewide list of county tag offices. In most donations you won't need to visit at all: you sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork.
Older vehicles. Georgia requires a title for most 1986-and-newer vehicles. DOR lists 1963 to 1985 model years as title-optional and 1962-and-older vehicles as not requiring a title; those typically change hands with a bill of sale and the registration in your name. (Georgia DOR: title not required or optional)
Lost title. Georgia replaces a lost title through the county tag office using Form MV-1 Title/Tag Application and a replacement fee (DOR lists $8). If a paid-off loan still shows on the record, the lender's Form T-4 lien release may also be needed. A title that is lost after you sign it gets replaced in your name and reassigned. Tell us at the start and we walk you through it. (Georgia DOR: replace a lost or stolen title)
Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. (Georgia DOR: cancelling a registration)
Questions we hear from Jasper donors
Do you pick up in Talking Rock, Tate, and Nelson?
Yes. We review requests across Pickens County, including Talking Rock, Tate, Nelson, Marblehill, and Ludville. Pickup is scheduled once the vehicle is accepted.
I am not at the cabin full time. Can you still pick up the vehicle?
Often, yes. Tell us how the driver can access the vehicle and where the keys will be. We confirm the details with you by phone before the tow is booked.
The vehicle belonged to a relative who passed away. Can I donate it?
Usually, but estate vehicles need the right paperwork. Georgia will not issue a replacement title in a deceased person's name, so tell us the situation first and we will explain the steps.
My truck is a 1979 with no title. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily. Georgia lists 1963 to 1985 model years as title-optional, so a vehicle that old can usually transfer with a bill of sale and the registration in your name.
