A fast-growing county seat

Canton sits at the southern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains on Interstate 575, about forty miles north of Atlanta, and its population grew from 7,709 in 2000 to 32,973 in 2020 (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Canton). Growth like that means a lot of households upgrading vehicles, and a lot of older cars, minivans, and pickups left in driveways.

North and east of town, around Ball Ground, Free Home, and Waleska, properties get bigger and roads get rougher. Let us know if the pickup is on a long private drive, behind a gate, or in a pasture so we send a truck that can get to it.

What to have ready in Cherokee County

  • Title owner: the name(s) on the front of your Georgia title. Every listed owner signs.
  • Loan status: whether a lender is still on the title. Electronic liens are released by the lender.
  • Keys and condition: runs, starts but doesn't drive, or doesn't start at all.
  • Access: driveway, street parking, apartment lot, or field, plus any HOA or gate details.

That is everything we need to give you a yes or no and set up the tow.

Cherokee County tag office and Georgia title steps

Cherokee County donors rarely need an extra trip. Georgia titles and registrations are handled by each county's tax commissioner, which runs the local tag office. For Cherokee County, that is the Cherokee County Tax Commissioner. Check that office's site for current hours and locations; Georgia DOR keeps a statewide list of county tag offices. In most donations you won't need to visit at all: you sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork.

Signing the title. Georgia DOR says the owner completes the assignment on the back of the original title, in blue or black ink, and that alterations or erasures can void it. Every owner listed on the front signs. Never hand over a title signed in blank; Georgia law treats that as a misdemeanor. We mark exactly which lines are yours before pickup. (Georgia DOR: transferring a Georgia title)

Loans and liens. If a lender's lien is still on the title, it has to be released first. For liens recorded electronically, DOR says only the lender can release them; on a paper title the lienholder signs the release section or gives you a Form T-4. Paid off years ago and never got the paperwork? Send us what you have. (Georgia DOR: releasing a lien)

Mileage. Under the federal odometer rule, model-year 2011 and newer vehicles still need a mileage disclosure when they change hands in 2026; 2010-and-older models are exempt. We fill this in with you. (Georgia DOR: odometer disclosure)

Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. (Georgia DOR: cancelling a registration)

Questions we hear from Canton donors

Do you pick up in Ball Ground, Waleska, and Holly Springs?

Yes. We review requests anywhere in Cherokee County, including Ball Ground, Waleska, Holly Springs, Hickory Flat, and Free Home. Pickup is scheduled after the vehicle is accepted.

Can I donate a minivan or SUV that still runs?

Absolutely. Running vehicles are welcome, and so are vehicles that do not run. Tell us the year, make, model, and mileage.

What mileage do I write on the title?

For model-year 2011 and newer vehicles, the federal rule still requires an odometer disclosure in 2026; 2010 and older models are exempt. We show you exactly what to write.

Do I need to visit the Cherokee County tag office?

Usually not. You sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork. You would visit the Cherokee County Tax Commissioner only for a replacement title or to move your plate to another vehicle.
