What makes this region different
Interstate 75 ties most of the region together; the Federal Highway Administration's route log lists Cartersville, Calhoun, and Dalton on it (FHWA Interstate route log). Rome sits where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers meet to form the Coosa (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Rome), and US 27 carries traffic through Floyd County. Dalton is known as the carpet capital of the world; the New Georgia Encyclopedia notes the surrounding region produces most of the nation's tufted carpets (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Dalton), and work vans and box trucks from local businesses are welcome for review.
Allatoona Lake, a Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Etowah River with its project office in Cartersville, is one of the most visited Corps lakes in the country (USACE: Allatoona Lake). Boats kept for Allatoona are good donations; we pick them up on the trailer. Whitfield County borders Hamilton and Bradley counties in Tennessee (U.S. Census county adjacency file); if your vehicle is titled in Tennessee, see our Tennessee page.
Pickups here are coordinated from our headquarters in Dawsonville and carried out by towing partners who work the region. We do not have an office, staff, or a drop-off lot in these cities, and we will not pretend to.
Georgia title steps
Titles in these counties are handled by each county's tax commissioner (links above). Most donors never need to visit: you sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork.
Signing the title. Georgia DOR says the owner completes the assignment on the back of the original title, in blue or black ink, and that alterations or erasures can void it. Every owner listed on the front signs. Never hand over a title signed in blank; Georgia law treats that as a misdemeanor. We mark exactly which lines are yours before pickup. (Georgia DOR: transferring a Georgia title)
Boats and personal watercraft. Boats are not titled at the county tag office. Georgia DNR's Wildlife Resources Division has issued electronic boat titles since July 1, 2020. When a registered boat changes hands, DNR says the owner reports the sale within 15 days and gives a detailed bill of sale; if a paper boat title was issued, it must be signed over. Personal watercraft are registered on the same vessel form, and boat trailers do not need a Georgia title. (Georgia DNR: boat registration and eTitles)
Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. (Georgia DOR: cancelling a registration)
Questions we hear from Northwest Georgia donors
Do you pick up in Rome, Dalton, Cartersville, and Calhoun?
Yes. We review requests across Floyd, Whitfield, Bartow, and Gordon counties. Pickup is coordinated from Dawsonville with towing partners and scheduled once the vehicle is accepted.
Can I donate a work van or box truck from a Dalton business?
Yes. Business-owned vehicles are titled in the business name, and an authorized representative signs. Tell us the size and condition so we send the right truck.
Can you pick up a boat used on Allatoona Lake?
Yes, on its trailer from your home or storage. Georgia boats are registered and electronically titled through Georgia DNR, so have the registration number ready.
Is towing free this far from Dawsonville?
Yes. Towing is free for accepted vehicles anywhere we arrange pickup. We give you a real pickup date once it is booked rather than promising same-day service.
