How pickup works in South Carolina
Pickups in South Carolina are coordinated from our headquarters in Dawsonville, Georgia and arranged with towing partners across the region. Towing is free for accepted vehicles. We do not have an office, staff, or a drop-off lot in South Carolina, and we will not pretend to. Cities closer to North Georgia are usually simpler to schedule; farther cities can take a little longer, and we give you a real date when the tow is booked.
South Carolina title basics
Signing the title. SCDMV says the seller signs the title over and records the odometer reading, the date, and the selling price on the back; if the title has no space for a price, a bill of sale goes with it (SCDMV: buying or selling a car). For a donation, we'll show you exactly what to enter.
Your plate. South Carolina plates stay with the owner. If you don't move the plate to another vehicle, SCDMV says to turn it in with Form 452 and file Form 416, Notice of Vehicle Sold, and then cancel your South Carolina liability insurance (SCDMV: license plate return). SCDMV notes that Form 416 protects the last registered owner (SCDMV Form 416).
Lost title. Replace it online or with Form 400, Title Application, before the donation (SCDMV: replace my title). If there's a lien, the duplicate goes to the lienholder.
Older vehicles. South Carolina's title-exemption list in state law has no age-based exemption, so an older car still needs its title (S.C. Code Title 56, Chapter 19).
Mileage. The federal odometer rule applies in every state: in 2026, model-year 2011 and newer vehicles need a mileage disclosure when they change hands; 2010-and-older models are exempt (49 CFR 580.17).
Closer to Georgia
If you live in the Augusta, Georgia area, or have a Georgia-titled car in South Carolina, see our Augusta area page and the Georgia guide; the rules follow the state that issued the title.
Questions we hear from South Carolina donors
Do you pick up in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston?
Yes. We review requests across South Carolina. Pickup is coordinated from Dawsonville, Georgia, arranged with towing partners, and free for accepted vehicles.
What do I do with my South Carolina license plate?
Keep it and move it to another vehicle, or turn it in to SCDMV with Form 452 and file Form 416, Notice of Vehicle Sold. Then cancel your liability insurance.
Does South Carolina require the title to be notarized?
SCDMV's seller instructions do not call for notarization of an ordinary vehicle title. The seller signs and records the odometer reading, date, and price.
My car is old. Do I still need a title in South Carolina?
Generally yes. South Carolina law has no model-year exemption from titling, so replace a lost title with Form 400 before donating.
