Accessibility Statement

Cars Helping Kids is committed to making our website usable by everyone — including people who use screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, voice control, and low-vision tooling.

Our commitment

We aim to make carshelpingkids.org usable in line with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. Accessibility is ongoing work, and this statement is not a certification that every page or third-party component is fully conformant.

What we've done

  • Color contrast. We check body text and interactive elements against WCAG contrast targets and welcome reports of missed combinations.
  • Keyboard navigation. Donation forms, menus, accordions, and dialogs are intended to be reachable and operable with a keyboard.
  • Focus visibility. Interactive elements are designed with visible focus indicators.
  • Semantic HTML. Heading hierarchy (h1 → h2 → h3) is consistent throughout. Landmark regions (header, nav, main, footer) are correctly marked.
  • Form labels. All form fields have associated <label> elements, with autocomplete attributes for assistive tech and password managers.
  • ARIA where needed. Modal dialogs use role="dialog" with proper aria-modal and labeling. Carousels expose previous/next controls with descriptive labels.
  • Image alt text. Informative images have descriptive alt text; decorative images are correctly marked aria-hidden.
  • Reduced motion. Animations respect the user's prefers-reduced-motion preference.
  • Mobile-friendly. Responsive design from 320px viewport up, with 16px+ form field text to prevent iOS zoom-on-focus.
  • Phone & text alternatives. Every page exposes 770-871-9422 for voice or SMS contact — so donors who prefer not to use the form can still complete the donation.

Known limitations

  • Some legacy PDF documents may not be fully tagged. We are remediating these on a rolling basis. If you encounter a PDF you cannot use with assistive tech, contact us — we will send you an accessible version.
  • The tax-deduction calculator widget is keyboard-operable, but screen-reader output of the calculated result is updated via an aria-live region. If you experience announcement issues, please report them.

Assistive technology compatibility

The site is built with standard browser and assistive-technology behavior in mind. We do not claim comprehensive testing across every version of:

  • JAWS (Windows)
  • NVDA (Windows)
  • VoiceOver (macOS and iOS)
  • TalkBack (Android)
  • Modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge (latest two major versions)
