What is Form 1098-C?

It is the IRS information form for contributions of qualified motor vehicles, boats, and airplanes. A copy can serve as the donor's required contemporaneous written acknowledgment when the claimed value is more than $500.

Most important distinction

Form 1098-C reports what happened to the vehicle. It does not guarantee that a donor may deduct the number shown, that the donor itemizes, or that every vehicle gift receives the same tax treatment.

When the charity must file it

The IRS instructions say a donee organization must file a separate Form 1098-C for each contribution of a qualified vehicle with a claimed value of more than $500. A qualified vehicle generally includes a motor vehicle manufactured primarily for public-road use, a boat, or an airplane; dealer inventory is excluded.

The 30-day acknowledgment timing

For a vehicle claimed above $500, the organization must furnish a contemporaneous written acknowledgment containing the required information. Under the IRS instructions, the deadline is generally no later than 30 days after:

  • the sale date, when the charity reports an arm's-length sale to an unrelated party; or
  • the contribution date, when the form reports significant intervening use, material improvement, or a qualifying below-market transfer to a needy individual.

Copies B and C of Form 1098-C may be provided to the donor, or the organization may furnish another compliant acknowledgment.

What the main boxes mean

BoxWhat it reports
1Date of contribution.
2a–2dOdometer mileage, year, make, and model.
3Vehicle or other identification number.
4a–4cWhether the vehicle was sold in an arm's-length transaction to an unrelated party, the sale date, and gross proceeds. When this sale rule applies, the deduction is generally limited to gross proceeds.
5a–5cWhether the organization plans a qualifying significant use or material improvement, or a qualifying below-market transfer to a needy individual, plus the required description.
6a–6cWhether goods or services were provided in exchange and their value or description.
7Used on the donor acknowledgment for a vehicle with a claimed value of $500 or less; the charity does not file Form 1098-C with the IRS solely for that contribution.

What happens at $500 or less

IRS Publication 4303 describes a special rule when a donated vehicle sells for $500 or less: the donor may generally claim the lesser of $500 or the vehicle's fair market value on the contribution date, provided the donor obtains a compliant written acknowledgment. “Up to $500” does not mean every low-sale vehicle automatically produces a $500 deduction.

Form 8283 is separate

The IRS Form 8283 page says individuals, partnerships, and corporations file Form 8283 to report information about noncash charitable contributions when the deduction for all noncash gifts is more than $500. Section and appraisal requirements depend on the amount and whether the deduction is limited to gross sale proceeds. Use the instructions for the tax year being filed.

Form 1098-C does not override the 2026 deduction rules

A donated vehicle is not a cash-or-check contribution, so it does not qualify for the limited 2026 non-itemizer charitable deduction described in IRS Publication 505. For an itemizer, Publication 505 also says charitable contributions are deductible only to the extent they exceed 0.5% of adjusted gross income in 2026. Form 1098-C supplies vehicle-contribution facts; it does not remove that floor or other limits.
