What makes South Georgia different

Farm country. Moultrie hosts the Sunbelt Ag Expo, which bills itself as North America's premier farm show (Sunbelt Ag Expo), and Tifton is home to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and UGA's Tifton campus for agricultural research (UGA Tifton campus). Old farm pickups, flatbeds, and utility trailers are common donations. Tell us whether the vehicle rolls, how a truck reaches it (field, barn, dirt road), and what title or registration you have. Georgia lists many older vehicles as title-optional, which often makes old farm trucks simpler than people expect.

Military families. Moody Air Force Base is about 10 miles northeast of Valdosta (Moody AFB), and Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany is home to Marine Corps Logistics Command (MCLB Albany). If you're relocating on orders, start early and tell us who will hand over the keys and signed title if you'll be gone.

Students. Valdosta State University (VSU) and ABAC (ABAC) bring student cars that sometimes don't make it to graduation.

Pickups here are coordinated from our headquarters in Dawsonville and carried out by towing partners who work the region. We do not have an office, staff, or a drop-off lot in these cities, and we will not pretend to. South Georgia is a long way from our base, so scheduling can take a little longer than in North Georgia; we give you a real date when the tow is booked.

Georgia title steps

Older vehicles. Georgia requires a title for most 1986-and-newer vehicles. DOR lists 1963 to 1985 model years as title-optional and 1962-and-older vehicles as not requiring a title; those typically change hands with a bill of sale and the registration in your name. (Georgia DOR: title not required or optional)

Signing the title. Georgia DOR says the owner completes the assignment on the back of the original title, in blue or black ink, and that alterations or erasures can void it. Every owner listed on the front signs. Never hand over a title signed in blank; Georgia law treats that as a misdemeanor. We mark exactly which lines are yours before pickup. (Georgia DOR: transferring a Georgia title)

Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. (Georgia DOR: cancelling a registration)

Questions we hear from South Georgia donors

Will you take an old farm truck that has sat in a field?

Often, yes. Tell us whether it rolls, how a tow truck reaches it, and what title or registration you have. Georgia lists 1963 to 1985 model years as title-optional and does not require titles for 1962-and-older vehicles.

I am leaving Moody AFB or MCLB Albany on orders. Can I donate my car first?

Yes, if you start early. Pickup is scheduled after acceptance. If you will be gone before then, tell us who will hand over the keys and signed title.

You are in North Georgia. Do you really pick up in South Georgia?

Yes. Pickups are coordinated from Dawsonville and carried out by towing partners who work the region. Towing is free for accepted vehicles; scheduling can take a little longer than in North Georgia.

Do I keep my license plate?

Yes. Georgia plates stay with the owner. Remove it before pickup and cancel the registration before cancelling insurance.
