Tax deduction for trailer donation
Your federal tax deduction equals the actual auction sale price on IRS Form 1098-C box 4c. Most trailer donations fall in the $300-$3,000 range, depending on size, type, and condition.
- $500 safe-harbor rule: if your trailer sells for $500 or less, claim up to $500 without further documentation.
- $501-$5,000: file IRS Form 8283 Section A and attach Copy B of Form 1098-C.
- Over $5,000: requires Form 8283 Section B and qualified appraisal. Rare but possible for large equipment trailers or premium horse trailers.
- For the full IRS rules, see IRS Publication 4303.
Title requirements by state
Most states require a title for trailers above a certain weight (typically over 3,000 lbs GVWR). Small utility trailers may not have been titled in the original state of registration; in that case, registration history plus bill of sale can sometimes substitute.
If you have a trailer without a clear title:
- Check your state DMV for a duplicate-title application (usually $5-$50, 1-3 week processing)
- Several states (Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas) have bill-of-sale workarounds for non-titled small trailers
- If trailer was inherited, provide death certificate + executor paperwork
- Call us at 770-871-9422 — most title issues are solvable in a 5-minute call

What gets reported on Form 1098-C
After the donated vehicle sells, the charity issues IRS Form 1098-C to the donor within 30 days. Box 4a confirms the vehicle's gross sale price. Box 4c states the exact dollar amount the donor can claim as their federal tax deduction. Box 7 indicates if the charity provided any goods or services in exchange (typically blank for vehicle donations). The donor attaches Copy B to Form 8283 Section A on their return when claiming deductions over $500.
