Two counties, one city
Atlanta is Georgia's capital and the Fulton County seat, crossed by Interstates 75, 85, 20, and 285 and by Georgia 400 (New Georgia Encyclopedia: Atlanta). The Census Bureau lists the city in both Fulton and DeKalb counties (Census 2020 Georgia place list), and the county your address is in decides your tag office.
We don't have an Atlanta office and won't pretend to. Pickups are booked from Dawsonville with towing partners who work the metro every day.
Apartment, deck, and street-parking pickups
City pickups depend on access. When you submit your vehicle, tell us:
- Where it's parked: driveway, on-street, surface lot, or parking deck. Many decks are too low for a flatbed, so a running car may need to be moved to the street or a surface lot first.
- Gate codes and building rules, including whether the property manager has to approve a tow.
- Street parking limits. If the car is on a street with time limits or permit zones, we'll plan the pickup window with you.
- Keys and condition. A car that won't start in a tight garage needs a plan before the truck arrives.
Leased cars belong to the leasing company and can't be donated by the driver. Financed cars need the lender's lien released first.
Fulton or DeKalb tag office and Georgia title steps
Atlanta residents use the tag office for whichever county their address is in. Georgia titles and registrations are handled by each county's tax commissioner, which runs the local tag office. For this area, that is the Fulton County Tax Commissioner and the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner's Office. Check that office's site for current hours and locations; Georgia DOR keeps a statewide list of county tag offices. In most donations you won't need to visit at all: you sign the title and we handle the transfer paperwork.
Loans and liens. If a lender's lien is still on the title, it has to be released first. For liens recorded electronically, DOR says only the lender can release them; on a paper title the lienholder signs the release section or gives you a Form T-4. Paid off years ago and never got the paperwork? Send us what you have. (Georgia DOR: releasing a lien)
Your license plate. In Georgia the plate stays with you, not the vehicle, so take it off before the tow truck arrives. You can move it to another vehicle you get at your county tag office. Cancel the registration online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J before you drop insurance; DOR fines coverage lapses on a vehicle that is still registered. (Georgia DOR: cancelling a registration)
Mileage. Under the federal odometer rule, model-year 2011 and newer vehicles still need a mileage disclosure when they change hands in 2026; 2010-and-older models are exempt. We fill this in with you. (Georgia DOR: odometer disclosure)
Questions we hear from Atlanta donors
Do you have an office in Atlanta?
No. Our headquarters is in Dawsonville, Georgia. Atlanta pickups are arranged through towing partners after a vehicle is accepted, and the tow is free.
My car is in a parking deck. Can a tow truck reach it?
Many decks are too low for a flatbed. If the car runs, it can usually be moved to the street or a surface lot; if not, tell us the clearance and we will plan around it.
Atlanta is in two counties. Which tag office do I use?
The one for your county: the Fulton County Tax Commissioner or the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner. For most donations you will not need to visit either.
Should I cancel insurance as soon as the car is picked up?
Cancel the Georgia registration first, online through DRIVES e-Services or with Form MV-18J, then cancel insurance. Georgia fines lapses in coverage on a vehicle that is still registered.
Can I donate a car with a loan on it?
Not until the lien is released. If the lender recorded it electronically, only the lender can release it. Once it is cleared, we can move forward.
